Some medications deplete your body of vital nutrients

When you started taking your medication, did your healthcare provider inform you that it might deplete (rid your body of) certain nutrients that your body NEEDS in order to function optimally?

If yes, WOO HOO! Congrats! You have an awesome healthcare provider. For the rest of us however, we’re not so lucky.

My OBGYN definitely never told me that the birth control pill she recommended would deplete my body of Vitamins B2, B3, B6, & B12, Vitamin C, folate, magnesium, selenium, and zinc.

No wonder I felt awful when I was on the pill! And for a long time afterward too.

What can you do?

For your viewing pleasure, I have pulled together a list of some medications and what they deplete. Accompanying that is a free PDF of those nutrients and what happens to your body when you start running out of them.

The purpose of this blog post is NOT to tell you to stop taking your medication.

The purpose is for you to be aware of these possible depletions so that you can have a conversation with your provider about how to mitigate your risk for issues that are caused by such depletions.

Insurance covers most vitamin and mineral testing, so go get some blood drawn, take a urine test, or go give a hair sample! It’s fun!

If you’re low in something, working with a nutrition professional can help you get back on the right track through dietary updates, supplementation, and/or lifestyle changes.

What are your thoughts on all this? Let me know in the comments below – I’d love to hear from you!
